We are now in our third year!

Our Track record

In 2006, we launched Write Lines by working with two high schools and one middle school in Harrow. Students worked with their designated poet coach over five weeks and performed their poems at the celebratory showcase. The show was also broadcast live by Ressonance FM.

In 2007, we worked with 125 students across 5 schools. The showcase was attended by around 200 people and a book of poems by the budding poets will be published in Spring 2008 by Salt Publishing. We also partnered with local newspaper the Harrow Observer, who ran workshops for students. Local radio stations DESI Radio and London Link also followed the progress of the project and are producing a CD of the showcase.

The project received publicity on LBC radio, where students were invited in to the studio to read their poems live on air. We also recruited young people in the planning and operational stages of the project. We are a movement for young people steered by young people.

Students involved in the projects have continued to write and have formed their own writing collectives, taking the initiative to invite published poets to lead workshops at their schools.

What the audience say

"I'd pay higher taxes for this to run again!" "The atmosphere was brilliant!" "the children really shined through – I was moved" "this must be kept going. It's contagious" "I came thinking it would be boring, it wasn't. I really enjoyed it!"

What teachers say

"This is the second year that I have been the lead teacher at Weald Middle School for "Write Lines" Project. I have been absolutely amazed by the standard of work achieved by the pupils, some of whom are only just mastering the English language." Carmela Crespin, Head of Year 7, Weald Middle School

"The Write Lines project was a fantastic experience for me personally, as well as for our students. I think we all gained a lot from it. I loved working with Roger Robinson, he was an inspiration and the students thought he was brilliant." Kate Kavanagh, Canons High School

"Having participated in the Write Lines workshops and presentations last year, the project already has an excellent reputation among pupils at Nower Hill... One of our young poets who struggles with English took part in last year's project and his parents have commented on what a remarked change they have seen in their son and his confidence in writing. He is now a founder of the Fusion poetry group which is an extension of this excellent project within Nower Hill." Lynsey Sharman, Lead Teacher at Nower Hill High School
